Joe Acker is the provincial Director of Clinical and Professional Practice for the British Columbia Emergency Health Services and holds appointments as Adjunct Professor with the University of British Columbia Department of Emergency Medicine and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Charles Sturt University School of Biomedical Sciences (Paramedicine) in Australia. Joe has been a paramedic for 28 years with clinical, executive, research and academic experience in Canada, Australia, the Middle East, Asia, and the United Kingdom. He worked as a helicopter flight paramedic in Alberta, an intensive care paramedic in New South Wales, and is currently licensed as an advanced care paramedic in British Columbia where he continues to support patient care in addition to his strategic leadership responsibilities. Having a passion for the international professionalization of paramedicine, Joe has held board level positions with the Paramedic Chiefs of Canada, International Paramedic, and Paramedics Australasia. Joe is very excited to be part of the Dalhousie University prehospital evidence based practice program because using evidence to inform frontline clinical decisions and the evolution of paramedics doing paramedic research are essential to becoming a recognized health profession.
